the USA to Canada border

From southern Ontario

Chapleau is 190 km, (two hours) west of Timmins, Ontario on Highway 101.

From southern Ontario head for Sudbury. From Sudbury you have two options:

Option 1:
You can take Hwy. 144 from Sudbury to the junction with Hwy 101 just west of Timmins and then take Hwy. 101 to Chapleau. That route is all good paved highway.

Option 2:
From Sudbury take Hwy. 17 West to Thessalon. At Thessalon take Hwy. 129 North to Chapleau. This route is also completely paved.

Once in Chapleau

You will come over a curved bridge across the rail yard to reach the main part of town.

Turn left when you have crossed this bridge, onto Pine Street.

Drive along Pine Street for three blocks to Aberdeen Street and turn left again.

We are at the north end of Aberdeen. The building has green and brown shingles on the walls and a metal roof.

If you missed the left turn and find yourself on Chapleau's main business street (Birch Street), drive East across the four-way stop that has the flashing red light and then turn left at Aberdeen Street (2 blocks past the red light). We are at the North end of Aberdeen Street.

By airline
If you live so far away from Chapleau that driving is impractical, you might consider flying by commercial airline to Timmins, Ontario or to Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. There you can have a rental car waiting and drive to Chapleau.

From U.S.A.

1 km = 0.621371 mile

The border crossing to Canada nearest to Chapleau is Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. That is at the very north end of Interstate Highway 75. We are 190 miles (three and a half hours) from Sault Ste. Marie.

You will drive through Sault Ste. Marie Michigan, where you cross into Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Canada. From there it is 190 miles, about three and a half hours to Chapleau. From Sault Ste. Marie Canada you have two options.

Option one:
Take Highway 17 North to Wawa and then Highway 101 East to Chapleau.

Option two:
This is 10 miles shorter but has many curves along the Mississagi River. You would take Highway 17 East to Thessalon and then Highway 129 North to Chapleau.

We do not recommend Highway 556 from Sault Ste. Marie past Ranger Lake to Highway 129. It is a gravel road, can be quite rough and will cost you much time and maybe the price of a new muffler. The other roads that we recommend are excellent and all paved.
