Cell-phones

We know that Sprint, Altel and Verizon phones work in Chapleau.

If you have a phone from Verizon, be sure to update its software before you leave home. To do that, dial *228 (star 2 2 8). It take about a minute. The roaming table will be updated to include the Chapleau service provider.

Internet access

High-speed wireless internet access is available free of charge right on the camp property through our WI-FI Hotspot. You have to bring your own computer. You can then go on-line if your computer is WI-FI enabled. The wireless router is located in the small building that also contains the pay-phone and library. This building is furnished with table and chairs for convenient computing. The wireless signal reaches about 300 feet from there. If you cannot receive the signal right in your cabin, simply take your laptop to the computer room.

Phone Cards and our Pay-Phone

We have a pay-phone on the property which accepts major credit cards and calling cards.

But our customers tell us that using a credit card on a pay-phone proved to be very expensive. Credit cards as well as phone cards that were bought in the U.S.A. got charged for 100 minutes immediately when the call was connected. Another person was charged $57 for a ten minute call when he used his card and $4.75 for each of several uncomleted calls when the line was busy.

We therefore recommend that you buy a phone card here in Chapleau. The most popular phone card is the Ci Ci Card. This card comes in $5 and $10 denominations. The $5 card gives you two and a half hours of long-distance calling.

The Ci Ci card is available at the following locations in Chapleau:

At the corner store downtown in Chapleau. The store is called The Chapleau News Depot and is located kitty-corners across the street from the post office in the centre of town. That is at the intersection with the four-way stop and the flashing red light.
At the convenience store next to the Aux Trois Moulins Restaurant. (Coming from our boat-house, turn right at the beer store and drive about 1 minute).

The Valuemart grocery store also sells phone cards.

You can also dial 1-800-COLLECT from any pay-phone to make a collect call but this is more expensive than using a Canadian phone card.

Phone Calls over the Internet

You can make your calls for practically no cost at all if you use Skype. You need your computer and a headset with microphone. Chances are that your computer came with a headset when you bought it. If not, you can easily buy one cheap at Wal-Mart or any electronics store. Just download Skype from skype.com and use our free internet connection.
